Selling Chametz
Why do we sell Chametz?
Before Passover, we sell our chametz (leavened products) to fulfill the Torah’s commandment that no chametz be owned by a Jew during the holiday. Rather than discarding valuable food or household items, Jewish law provides a mechanism for a formal, legally binding sale to a non-Jew for the duration of Passover. This transfer removes the chametz from our ownership while allowing it to be repurchased after the holiday. The practice ensures we observe Passover properly, avoid waste, and treat both the letter and the spirit of the law with care and integrity.
