Coach John Groce
When Coach Groce came to Hillel a few weeks ago to talk about leadership, I was excited but didn't know what to expect. But I left his talk with the above quote, which I have started applying to my life. In life, we often define ourselves by what we do, rather than as a person who does these things. As such, when we don't succeed in one of the domains of our personality, we perceive it as a failure or as inferiority of ourselves, rather than as a mistake in one of the domains of our lives that we can work on and use as a lesson. Take Coach Groce for example. He's a husband, a father, the men's basketball coach, a friend, a grandson, etc. If the men's basketball team loses a game, that doesn't mean he is a failure as a person, he still has all those other things going for him! Instead, he uses it to evaluate his players, his starting lineup, and his coaching strategies. So in these last several weeks of the semester leading up to finals, keep in mind you are not your GPA, you are not your classes, you are not other people's opinions of you, you are you! Learn from the bad a dude the good to keep yourself level-headed.
Have a great week!
